Zion Williamson joined Spartanburg Day School where he was a team member of the Griffins. He competed at South Carolina Hornets AAU team along with Ja Morant. He also led the school to the South Carolina Independent School Association (SCISA) state championship.

During his second year in high school, he was named SCISA Region I-2A Player of the Year for his impressive 28.3 points and 10.4 rebounds.

Later in 2016, he joined the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) Top 100 camp and accomplished as a lead scorer. In the same year in August, he was the winner of the Under Armour Elite 24 showcase dunk contest in New York City.  

During his junior year, he was picked as a top 50 player on the Naismith Prep Player of the Year Award watch list. His team also won the victory over Gray Collegiate Academy at the Chick-fil-A Classic in December 2016.

Williamson won Most Valuable Player (MVP) at the Farm Bureau Insurance Classic. His frame got boosted when Drake wore his jersey in an Instagram post.

Williamson played in the 2018 McDonald's All-American Game. He was also named to the USA Today All-USA first team and MaxPreps All-American second team.

Williamson received offers from 16 NCAA Division I programs, including Clemson, Florida, North Carolina and South Carolina. At the end of his senior season, he was ranked the number one player in the 2018 class by recruiting service 247Sports.

During an ESPN telecast in 2018, Williamson made his commitment to Duke University.

Williamson played in a pre-season game for Duke in August 2018. He was able to score 28 points, 11 rebounds and 6 blocks during his first regular season game on November 2018.

Zion was named Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). 

He was awarded with ACC Freshman of the Week for the second time after his win over Clemson on January 5, 2019. On January 21, he was accoladed with ACC Freshman of the Week for the third time.

He also set a new Duke freshman record with nine 25-point games in the season. He was named ACC Freshman of the Week for the fourth time. He also earned the National Player of the Week distinction from the Naismith Trophy.

After his stepfather dismissed the ongoing rumor about his second year at Duke, Williamson declared for the NBA draft. On the 20th of June 2019, he was the first overall pick in the 2019 NBA draft by the New Orleans Pelicans.

During the off-season, he suffered a Jones fracture in his right foot. He was expected to be ready to return by the start of the season but he missed the entire 2021-2022 season.

After his return, he formed a five-year rookie extension contract with the New Orleans Pelicans worth $193 million guaranteed on October 4, 2022.

In December of 2023, he was named the NBA Western Conference Player of the Week for Week 8 which gained him his first NBA Player of the Week award. He missed the remainder of the regular season and the Pelicans' appearance in their play-in game against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
