Most Free Throws In A College Basketball Game

Most free throws in a college basketball game are by Pete Maravich and Ben Woodside each. Sindarius Thornwell ranks second on the list with 25 throws.

The NCAA Division I is the intercollegiate athletics highest level in the United States that governs the University Division college basketball programs.

Arlen Clark of the Oklahoma State Cowboys men's basketball team holds the record for the most consecutive free throws of 24 in a game.

Maravich and Woodside recorded the highest free throws in a game in college basketball with 31 and 35 attempts, respectively. 

Maravich played against the Oregon State on 22 December 1969, while Woodside played against Stephen F.  Austin on 12 December 2008 while making the free throws.

Bob Carney of the Bradley Braves men's basketball program recorded the most free throws March Madness of 23 free throws against the Colorado State Rams.

Pete Maravich - 30

Pete Maravich is an all-time high free throw scorer in a college basketball game. He made 30 out of 31 throws while playing against the Oregon St. men's team.

Referred to as Pistol Pete, he started for the Louisiana State University Tigers men's basketball program during college from 1970 to 1980.

He led the NCAA Division I with an all-time high points of 3,667, averaging 44.2 points per game. Pete is among the youngest players inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1987.

The Aliquippa, Pennsylvania native, Maravich played for Atlantic Hawks, Utah Jazz, and Boston Celtics during his ten-year career with the NBA.

He was considered among the best ball handlers and top offensive creative talents of all time. In 1996, he was named to the NBA's 50th Anniversary team.

Ben Woodside - 30

Ben Woodside has made the most free throws in a game of 30 throws alongside Pete. He reached the milestone in 2008 while facing Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks.

Benjamin Michael Woodside, a former professional American basketball point guard, spent most of his eight-year career in Europe.

He played for the North Dakota State men's basketball team in college from 2005 to 2009, being named the Summit League Player of the Year in the 2008-09 season.

In 2008, Woodside recorded a 60-point enactment against the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks and became the Bison's career scoring leader ten days later against the Northern Arizona team.

While Woodside is the top free throw scorer in a college basketball team, Frank Selvy holds the record for the most free throws in a season, with 355 throws in 444 attempts in 1954.

Teddy Okereafor - 25

Teddy Okereafor holds 25 free throws record NCAA in a game while serving as a point guard for the Rider Broncs men's basketball team.

The professional British point guard played college basketball for the Rider Broncs and the Virginia Commonwealth University Rams men's basketball programs.

In college, Okereafor was named to the All-MAAC Third Team and the All-MAAC Second Team as a senior and junior, respectively.

He has played for the Cypriot Basketball League System's OPAP Basketball League's Apollon Limassol basketball club since 2022.

While Okereafor is among the players to make the most free throws in a single college basketball game, Tyler Hansbrough records the most free throws made all time record.

Hansbrough reached the milestone in 1241 attempts during his four-year career with the North Carolina Tar Heels from 2006 to 2009.

Sindarius Thornwell - 25

Sindarius Thornwell ranks second in the most free throws made all-time in the NCAA with 25 throws as a South Carolina Gamecocks shooting guard.

The Lancaster, South Carolina native Thornwell last played for the Turkish Basketball Super League's Frutti Extra Bursaspor.

After joining the South Carolina men's basketball in 2012, Sindarius became the second player in the club to score four rebounds and 13.4 points per game.

The 2017 SEC Player of the Year, Thornwell began his professional career as a 47th pick by the Milwaukee Bucks in the 2017 NBA draft, who sold his draft rights to LA Clippers.

Alongside the Los Angeles Clippers, Sindarius started for the NBA's New Orleans Pelicans and the Orlando Magic throughout his professional career.

Gabe Levin - 24

Gabe Levin is a professional basketball player who set the free throw record NCAA of 24 free throws as a member of the Long Beach State men's basketball.

The NBA G League's South Bay Lakers' forward Levin played college basketball for the Long Beach State Beach and Loyola Marymount Lions men's basketball programs from 2013 to 2018.

During his final year with Long Beach State from 2015 to 2018, Levin matched the club's 47-year-old long record of 45 points in a game.

He was named to the Big West First Team as the Big West Player of the Week in 2018. Also, as a Loyola Marymount Lions player, he was named the WCC All-Freshman Team in 2014.

The professional American-Israeli basketball forward Gabe became the South Bay Lakers' opening night roster in November 2022.

Grant Williams - 23

The NBA Dallas Mavericks power forward Grant Dean Williams secured the most free throws college basketball record of 23 throws at Tennessee Volunteers.

Grant Williams played college basketball for the Tennessee Volunteers men's program from 2016 to 2019 before being drafted 22nd overall by the Boston Celtics in the 2019 NBA draft.

This Houston, Texas native, professional American power forward led the Celtics to the NBA Finals in 2022. He was elected the National Basketball Players Association's first vice president in 2023.

During his time with Tennessee, Williams was named the SEC Player of the Year consecutively in the 2017-18 and the 2018-19 seasons. He became the first player in the club's history since Corliss Williamson in 1995 to do so.

He led the Volunteers men's basketball program in the 2018 and 2019 NCAA tournaments as a third and second seed, respectively.

Tyree Appleby - 23

Tyree Appleby is a professional American basketball point guard for the LNB Pro A's Limoges CSP. He played for three different programs during his college days.

Appleby secured a record of 23 free throws during the 2022-23 season with the Wake Forest Demon Deacons men's basketball program.

The Little Rock, Arkansas native Appleby established himself as one of the Atlantic Coast Conference's top players, leading in both assist and scoring during the season.

Before Wake Forest, Tyree played college basketball for the Cleveland State Vikings and the Florida Gators men's basketball programs from 2017-2019 and 2020-2022, respectively.

During his sophomore year in the Vikings, the Betclic Elite's Appleby averaged 5.6 assists and 17.2 points, earning the honors of the second-team All-Horizon League.

Peter Jok - 22

The South Sudanese professional basketball small forward Peter Jok made 22 free throws in a game while playing for the Iowa Hawkeyes men's basketball program.

The Khartoum, Sudan native Jok last played for the French LNB Pro A's Cholet Basket during the 2021-22 season.

He played college basketball for the Iowa Hawkeyes from 2013 to 2017. He tied a freshman record by shooting 80 percent or more and scoring ten or higher points.

He tied the record in the NCAA tournament's first-round game against the Tennessee Volunteers men's basketball.

Peter was named to the second-team and the first-team All-conference in the Big Ten in 2016 and 2017, respectively.

He completed his college basketball career at the Hawkeyes with more then 400 rebounds and 1500 points.

Chris Clemons - 22

The professional American basketball player Christopher Adam Clemons played point guard for the NCAA's Campbell Fighting Camels men's basketball team.

Clemons plays professional basketball for the NBA G League's Windy City Bulls. He secured 22 free throws in a game during his time with the Campbell men's basketball program from 2015 to 2019.

He played for the Chinese Basketball Association's Sichuan Blue Whales in 2023 before rejoining the Bulls in November 2023.

The Raliegh, North Carolina native Clemons was signed as an undrafted rookie by the Houston Rockets of the National Basketball Association in 2019.

During his senior season with the Camels, Chris ranked third highest in scoring in college basketball history, leading the NCAA with 30.1 points per game in scoring.

After two seasons with the Rockets in the NBA, Clemons was waived by the club. He played for the NBA G League's Maine Celtics for a season before joining the City Bulls in 2022.

Drew Pember - 22

Drew Pember has been an American college basketball power forward for the UNC Asheville Bulldogs men's basketball program since 2021.

He recorded 22 free throws in a single game as a Bulldog during the 2022-23 NCAA Division I season.

Before the Bulldogs, Pember played for the Tennessee men's basketball from 2019 to 2021. He played 22 games off the bench for the club, averaging one rebound and 1.3 points per game.

He was named the 2023 Big South Conference men's basketball tournament's Most Valuable Player after recording 29 points against Cambell in the final.

While Pember ranks among the players with high free throws in a game, the most consecutive free throws NCAA in a season is made by the Villanova Wildcats's Gary Buchanan.
