WNBA Players From Chicago [Born and Raised]

WNBA players from Chicago are Allie Quigley, Olayinka Sanni, Amanda Thompson and Devereaux Peters. Quigley is a 1986 born native of Joliet City.

Sporting News has awarded Chicago the "Best Sports City" three times in 1993, 2006, and 2010. The Vibrancy City has always made significant contributions to various sports, bringing new players into the limelight.

There are many WNBA players who were born and raised in Chicago, Illinois who have made a successful career for themselves, thanks to the resources and opportunity provided to them. 

Throughout its 24-year history, the WNBA has drafted over 40 players who graduated from Illinois high schools.

Cynthia Cooper, one of the greatest WNBA players was also born in Chicago. Recently Copper has worked as a coach for Texas Southern to encourage young bloods.

1. Allie Quigley - Joliet, Illinois

Allie Quigley was picked in the 2nd round of the 2008 WNBA Draft by the Seattle Storm. Quigley played for the Chicago Sky from 2013 to 2022.

Passionate about basketball since age 7, Allie participated in the 2004 WBCA High School All-America game after attending Joliet Catholic Academy.

Quigley's college career began after she went to DePaul University in 2004. She played for the Blue Demons for 4 years till 2008 before the WNBA draft.

In the 2008-09 season, Quigley had a chance to play overseas. She joined the Turkish Super League.

Later in 2010, she came back to Europe for Pecs 2010 which was held in Hungary. Her dedication to the Pecs got her Hungarian citizenship through which she was able to be on the Hungarian national team in 2012.

The 37-year-old player has been playing for 10 clubs since 2008. She had a contract with UMMC Ekaterinburg till the end of 2022, however since she has decided not to play with any clubs for the 2023 season. 

Being awarded with the WNBA championship in the year 2021 along with 3 WNBA All-Star throughout 2017-2019. Not only that she has also been rewarded with various medals and honors.

2. Olayinka Sanni - Chicago Heights, Illinois

Olayinka Sanni is one of the WNBA players from Illinois currently playing for Phoenix Mercury. Sanni was drafted into the WNBA in 2008 by the Detroit Shock.

The Nigerian-American player went to Homewood-Flossmoor public school before joining West Virginia College in 2008 for her undergraduate course.

After being drawn into the WNBA, Olayinka stayed with Detroit Shock for a season till 2009 and later, she was traded to Phoenix Mercury in 2011.

The 6 feet 2-inch player played in France during the WNBA off-season from 2008 to 2009 as a team member of Calais. During the off-season of 2009 and 2010, she has been competing for the ESB Villeneuve-d'Ascq.

A Chicago native, Sanni founded a non-profit foundation named the Olayinka Sanni Foundation which accommodates the development of boys and girls through basketball. She also hosted a camp for basketball in 2017.

3. Amanda Thompson - Chicago, Illinois

Amanda Thompson is among the basketball players from Chicago who went to Whitney Young. Thompson was nominated as the BSNF Defensive Player of the Year in 2015.

Previously she played for the University of Oklahoma from 2006 to 2010 before being drafted into WNBA. She was chosen by the Tulsa Shock in the 2010 NBA draft in the second round 19th overall pick.

According to ESPN, the power forward played only a season at the Tulsa from 2010 to 2010 and the Atlanta Dream from 2014 to 2014. 

4. Devereaux Peters - Chicago, Illinois

Devereaux Peters made her debut in the WNBA in 2012 with the Minnesota Lynx. Peters was named Big East Conference Defensive Player of the Year in 2012.

The 6-foot-2 athlete completed her high school education at Fenwick which lies in Oak Park, Illinois. She attended Notre Dame Fighting Irish women's basketball during her college from 2007 to 2012.

During her university, she directed the Notre Dame squad towards the final and they finished second during the 2012 NCAA women's basketball tournament.

Her professional career began in 2012 after she became part of Minnesota till 2015. She played the 2016 season with Indiana and the 2018 season with Phoenix.

Peters has appeared in a total of 160 games throughout her WNBA career winning two championship titles. She won her first Finals in 2013 with the Lynx followed by her second in 2015.

5. Tricia Liston - Chicago, Illinois

Tricia Liston has been amongst the best basketball players from Chicago. Liston is a pupil from Fenwick High School in Oak Park, Illinois.

She played at the Duke Blue Devils women's basketball during her senior year from 2010 till the end of 2014. After that, she was drafted into the WNBA in the first round as the 12th overall pick by the Minnesota Lynx.

In the year 2013, Liston was nominated for the United States Women's World University Games basketball team which was occurring in Kazan, Russia. Their powerful gameplay garnered them a gold medal and the World University Championships.

Liston played only a single season in the Minnesota Lynx from 2014 to 2015. Later it was found that she got transferred to Bucheon KEB Hana Bank, which is a South Korean women's basketball club in 2016.

6. Jewell Loyd - Lincolnwood, Illinois

Jewell Loyd was the first overall selection in the 1st round 2015 WNBA draft by the Seattle Storm. Loyd scored a total of 1,909 points during her college career.

She attended Niles West as her high school. Later she began her senior year at Notre Dame in 2012 and completed her academic session in 2015.

During her final year as Notre Dame Fighting Irish women's basketball team member, she was named the ESPN Women's College Basketball Player of the Year.

Loyd has also been active during her WNBA off-seasons. She has played in various overseas clubs in the past years such as Perfumerías Avenida, Guri KDB Life Winnus and so on.

The 5-foot-10-inch player has won the WNBA trophy in 2018 and 2020. She was also nominated as the WNBA Rookie of the Year in 2015. Along with that, she has been rewarded with many trophies, gold medals as well as awards.

7. Haley Gorecki - Hoffman Estates, Illinois

Haley Gorecki plays as a shooting guard for Casademont Zaragoza of La Liga Feminina. Haley completed her senior school at Duke in 2020.

Leaving her high school, she was named the Ms. Basketball of Illinois in 2015 along with Gatorade Player of the Year.

Her college career was running smoothly as she made her appearance in 14 games right after her injury. She had to halt her 2015-2016 season. She completed her qualification in 2019 but played till 2020 as a graduate student.

The 26-year-old player was listed in the WNBA draft in 2020 as 3rd round pick by the Seattle Storm.  But was renounced by the club on May 26 as she did not make it into the team.

Gorecki was selected as a third-team All-American by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association in 2020. Later in 2021, she became committed to Casademont Zaragoza.

8. Kathleen Doyle - Hinsdale, Illinois

Kathleen Doyle has made it into the 26th place in Illinois Girls High School basketball rankings. Doyle is presently playing for the only Chicago WNBA team, Sky.

The Indiana Fever listed Kathleen as the WNBA draft in 2020 during their second round in 14th overall pick. She had her active playing season for three years and started her coaching journey.

As a native of the Chicago suburb, she attends Benet Academy High School. Her university education began in Iowa from 2016 to 2020.

During her final season at the academy, she was named Big Ten Player of the Year for the season of 2020. She also received the privilege to signify the US at the 2019 Pan American Games winning a silver medal for the team.

In the year 2022, she was transferred to the Sky from the Indian Fever where she is currently playing. Doyle played in the Pan American Games, 2019 Lima where she represented the national team and won a silver medal.

9. Angelina Williams - Chicago, Illinois

Angelina Williams is one of the retired Chicago WNBA players who played for the Phoenix Mercury. Williams was born on 21 July 1983 to Ricky and Darlene Harvest.

The 6-foot player used to be a forwarder for the Phoenix Mercury in 2005. In the year 2006, she was moved to Detroit Shock. Those were only the two seasons where she played.

Williams studied at George Washington High School and later became a pupil of the University of Illinois from 2001 to 2005. Her graduation was in sports management and she was also selected to be a member of the Dean's List.

10. Allison Curtin - Taylorville, Illinois

Allison Curtin was chosen by the Houston Comets as the 12th overall pick in the first round of the 2003 WNBA draft.

She was a student at the University of Illinois from 1998 to 2001. Curtin was awarded with the Illinois Ms. Basketball in the year 1998.

After a year in 2002, she joined the University at Tulsa till 2003. Prior to that, she was a student at Taylorville Senior High School.

During her overall WNBA career, Curtin played 128 games and managed an average of 17.3 points, 5.7 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game. Her best stats were in the 2002-03 season where she scored her career high 692 points.
