First released in December 1994 as “NBA Live 95” with the cover made of a 7-player action shot from the 1994 NBA Finals, Knicks vs Rockets.

Being on the front cover of a popular basketball game is always a great feeling which can also be considered an honor that is reserved for the best players in the league.

Shaquille O'Neal was the first athlete to be featured on the cover of NBA Live 1996. Due to O'Neal's presence and his persuasive personality the game became a huge success.

NBA Live covers have also featured several legendary players who have left a permanent mark on the game of basketball. Prominent players such as Kobe Bryant, Allen Iverson, LeBron James, and Stephen Curry have also been the face of the NBA Live game.

NBA Live 19 - Joel Embiid

Joel Embiid was on the cover of NBA Live 19 which was released on 7 September 2018. The game is available on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

NBA Live 19 was developed by EA Tiburon and published by EA Sports. It includes a career mode called "The One" where players create their own character along with their special abilities and make progress with the story mode.

The Cameroonian player became most popular during the season of 2017-18 for his average of 28.1 points per game, 13.0 rebounds and 3.2 blocks per game. His popularity and performance gained him the cover of NBA Live 19.

Embiid has been playing in the Philadelphia 76ers since 2014 in the center position. Six-time NBA All-Star Joel has also been named to the All-NBA Team five times and the All-Defensive Team three times.

Furthermore, he was awarded the NBA's Most Valuable Player in 2023.

The game was nominated for "Control Precision" and "Control Design” at the National Academy of Video Game Trade Reviewers Awards in 2019.

NBA Live 18 - James Harden

NBA Live 18 was released on September 15, 2017. The game was released for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One featuring James Harden.

The game had a feature called "UltimateTeam" mode which allowed participants to draft players creating a custom roster. It is the first game that featured a full WNBA roster.

It supports both single-player and multiplayer gaming experience. NBA Live 18 had a Game Face app for iOS and Android devices which allowed players to scan their faces and upload them into the game.

James Harden was selected for the cover for his accomplishment of leading the Houston Rockets to the Western Conference Finals. In July 2017 he signed a four-year contract with the Rockets valued at $288 million.

He was the NBA Most Valuable Player in 2018 and was also a two-time NBA assistant leader in 2017 and 2023.

NBA Live 16 - Russell Westbrook

Introduced with a new cooperative and online multiplayer mode NBA Live 16 was admired by fans and critics. Russell Westbrook was featured on the cover page.

Players can create characters in the new mode called the “Rising Star”. They can level themselves up as they progress toward NBA stardom by using experience points obtained from participating in games.

Many of the game's features such as freestyle control and movement were improved with graphics and more animations. Also, defense, offense, passing, shooting and dribbling have all been upgraded in NBA Live 16.

Westbrook was a strong candidate for the NBA Live 16 cover after he finished fourth in the MVP voting and led the NBA in scoring 11 triple-doubles in the season of 2015. He had a seven-game winning streak paired with the Thunders.

One of the core features of the game is the introduction of the mode "The Rise of Westbrook,". It allowed players to experience Russell’s journey from college to the NBA.

NBA Live 15 - Damian Lillard

Released for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One NBA Live 15 featured Damian Lillard. The game had 70% of the NBA players.

Damian is an exciting young player who averaged 23.1 points, 4.6 rebounds and 6.5 assists per game during his breakout season. He is also responsible for leading the Portland Trail Blazers to the playoffs for the first time in six years in the 2013-14 season.

The 6-foot 2-inch player is a seven-time NBA All-Star winner and All-NBA First Team in 2018. His incredible shooting ability and clutch play became very popular among fans.

The basketball simulation video game was released on October 28, 2014, in North America and on October 31, 2014 in Europe.

NBA Live 15 received 5.5/10 from IGN Entertainment stating that it has clumsy controls and stiff animation. Although a few small changes were made to the game still it still faced a lot of backlash from its fans and critics.

NBA Live 14 - Kyrie Irving

Kyrie Irving was on the cover page of NBA Live 14. It was the first game to be released on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2013.

The first gameplay trailer was released at the Xbox One event by EA Sports. It became available to the general public on November 19, 2013.

Kyrie was nominated for the NBA Live 14 cover page for being the NBA’s youngest player to score 40 points at Madison Square Garden in the 2012-13 season. He also got selected for the All-Star game and the Rising Stars Challenge.

The shooting guard won the NBA championship trophy in 2016 and the NBA All-Star eight times.

NBA Elite 11 - Kevin Durant

NBA Elite 11 is the 17th installment in the EA NBA Live series with the name NBA Elite. The cover features Kevin Durant of the Oklahoma City Thunder.

On 5 November 2010, NBA Elite 11 was released for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 supporting single-player and multiplayer games. But was later canceled due to a glitch in the system. Controls such as dribbling and shooting were altered with new animation.

The game featured a new mode called “Become Legendary Mode” where a single player could switch to career mode and play alone.

Kevin Durant had become the best player for that time because of his outstanding average of 25.0 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game. Under his leadership, the Thunder won 55 games and earned the fourth seed in the Western Conference in the 2010-11 season.

He was considered a game changer by Jordan Edelstein the VP of Marketing at EA Sports.

NBA Live 10 - Dwight Howard

NBA Live 10 was developed by EA Canada and published by Electronic Arts in 2009. Dwight Howard was introduced on the cover of the game.

NBA live mobile basketball was released for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PSP and iOS. A new training facility was presented called the Hanger where a player could sharpen his skills. Small details such as tattoos, hair, shoes, uniforms, signature shots and moves were graphically improved.

The game also featured FIBA teams where players could play choosing one of the 31 FIBA national teams available.

During Howard's season in Orlando Magic in 2009-10, he set up a strong win of 17 games over 21 making it a record of the club. He was also the starting player in the 2010 NBA All-Star Game and completed his season with 59 wins.

His accomplishments made the way forward for NBA Live cover. Along with that his strength, athleticism and ability to rebound and protect the rim added extra flavor in making him on the cover of NBA games.

NBA Live 09 - Tony Parker

Featuring Toney Parker NBA Live 09 was released on October 2008. The game was made available for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, Xbox 360 and Wii.

There were some changes made in the international version of the game. Such as:

Parker was chosen for the video game cover due to his leadership in guiding the San Antonio Spurs to win the NBA championship in 2007 earning him the title of NBA Finals MVP.
