UNC Vs Duke Basketball Rivalry Record
UNC and Duke played their first game against each other on the 24th of January in 1920.
Considered one of the most intense rivalries in US sports, Sports Illustrated ranked it as the #1 Rivalry in college basketball in 2018.
The teams have had quite some significance in the ACC tournaments. They have achieved 49 ACC regular season titles and 38 tournament titles combined in history.
However, the rivalry between the teams escalated after the act of Art Heyman in 1960. Tension heightened more when a brawl started between Heyman and Larry Brown during a varsity game in 1961.
The head coaches of the team during that time were Dean for North Carolina and Mike Krzyzewski for the Duke.
The coaches too helped to heighten the rivalry between the teams. The tussles between the team was loved by the audience and highlighted by cable TV broadcasters such as ESPN.
Duke vs UNC overall record shows the victory of UNCs over the series by 143 to 117 wins. However, Duke leads the charge by 4 wins (55-51) in the games played at Durban.
The match between UNC and Duke was one of the most awaited games of 2023 for many college basketball fans.
On March 4th of 2023, the UNC loss against Dukes at their home ground by a 57-62 point difference prevented them from appearing in the 2023 NCAA tournament.
In addition to that, the chances of these two teams meeting at the NCAA have dipped down because of that confrontation. The debate about the better team has been going on for more than 40 years and seems likely to continue in the future too.
