NBA Hall Of Fame Eligibility
NBA Hall of Fame eligibility criteria is different for players and other individuals. The active players do not get the honor whilst active coaches and refs do.
The memorial was established in 1959 to honor the people who have contributed to basketball. Besides that, the crew has also organized tournaments and exhibitions as a contribution from their side.
Legendary athletes, referees, coaches, and sportscasters are selected for the recognition. The induction criteria for the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame are as follows:
- The player, coach, or referee must fully retire for at least three seasons.
- The active coaches should have at least 25 years of full-time service at the high school level or beyond, or be retired for three seasons. Besides, they should be at least 60 years old.
- The referees are eligible if they have provided service for 25 years or they are retired for a minimum of three seasons.
There are no criteria for the ones who have significantly contributed to a basketball game. Sports commentators and writers are also chosen on the basis of their works.
Committees
There are currently six committees in the organization. Four committees that have the right to select a prospective candidate for induction are:
- North American Screening Committee
- Women's Screening Committee
- International Screening Committee
- Veterans Screening Committee
The curated list is submitted to Honors Committee after the selection process is completed by these organizations. The Hall's Board of Trustees goes through the list. They can remove any candidate who has harmed the integrity of the basketball game.
Honors Committee consists of 12 stable members and a group of 12 rotating specialists. The individual who gets 18 positive votes(75% of all votes) will be inducted into the memorial.
